denny: Me, topless, being a tart. (New and improved)
About six years ago I posted a fitness update (itself the first one after a long gap) - the title was "The numbers look bad, but I look fine". The numbers in question being:

... behind a cut, in case people don't want the details ... )

The 'measurements' I actually care about the most are:

1. Do I feel good today?

Bit nebulous, but I am daily aware that I feel my age more now than I did when I was fitter - although also, that was ~8 years ago, so there's more age to feel! Still, I am pretty sure that if I were fitter again, I'd be feeling those years a lot less when I did simple stuff like crouch down to pick the cat up or whatever.

I think goal one of starting to do weights and hopefully other exercise again is simply to feel like I can cope with day to day life without grunting involuntarily every time I exert myself the slightest amount :)

2. Can I do cool stuff?

This is mostly about parkour movements (not that I've been out to play more than once or twice in the last 3 years), and the answer is currently mostly 'no'. Acrobatics also figures in here, but it's been even longer since I tried a somersault. Partially practice would help with being able to say 'yes' to this one, but reinstating a basic level of strength would certainly be reassuring, probably sensible, and possibly essential if I don't want to injure myself doing something that five years ago would have seemed trivial.

3. Do I look good today?

Vanity started this journey for me, and I will always defend it as a valid and 'worthy' motivation for people to choose to get fitter :)

I do think I look okay currently, as it happens, although that's partly because I'm relatively lean and like most people I score that too highly when assessing looks. Once my brain kicks in a bit more I note that I'm nowhere near as muscled as I used to be - I'd like to restore at least some of that muscle before I'm happier answering 'yes' to this question without qualifiers.

4. Am I strong enough to be useful?

One of the mottos of the people who developed parkour as a discipline was 'be strong to be useful', and I think it's a nice guideline to aim for. Can you carry your shopping home without hurting yourself, no matter what you choose to buy? Or a real example from back when I was strong enough to be useful; can you carry your friend to the car if she can't walk right now? I was pleased to be able to do that back then, and I doubt I would do it so confidently now. I'd like to be approximately that strong, and that useful, again. I don't need to be much stronger than that, to my mind, and just piling up bigger numbers on the weights for their own sake doesn't appeal to me (any more) as a motivation.

It'd be nice to claim these four questions were all I care about, but I am a geek and of course I want to reduce problems to nice simple quantifiable measurements and then keep score :-P

So, of the numbers my scales give me, the ones I care about (in order of how much I care), are:

1. Muscle percentage
2. Body fat
3. Visceral fat
4. Weight
5. Estimated age

1 is pretty simple - the more of me that is muscle, the more cool stuff I can do with my body, and the more likely it is that I am strong enough to be useful, etc :)

2 and 3 are almost a tie - body fat is slightly ahead because I'm vain, and also because the less of it I'm carrying around, the more cool stuff I can do with my body (higher power to weight ratio ftw). However, as I understand it visceral fat correlates pretty strongly with health outcomes; I'm old enough to care about that shit now, especially since my dad's heart attack. I suspect these two will swap places for me at some point in the next few years.

The fact that I care about 4 annoys me, I'm occasionally even tempted to stop tracking it, but much like BMI it is a useful rough proxy for various other things (notably, 'do I look good') and so on the list it stays for now. I might stop listing it first though, to fight the precedence that both scales and society give it ;)

(I have now gone back and demoted 'weight' in the stats boxes) :)

And finally, while I am fully aware that 5 is the most bullshit stat of the many dubious stats that fall out of my scales, it's still hard not to feel a bit miffed when it's higher than your actual age as it was six years ago! Or to feel quietly smug when it's 12 years below your actual age, like today. But again - I know I was stronger and more capable then than I am now. So, not too smug, eh?

I've just been reading a few articles on 'getting back into weights/exercise/fitness after a few years away' and they all had the same obvious advice - don't rush it. Sadly there were no magic shortcuts to be found, not entirely to my surprise. But most of them did also say that if you're sensible and just work at it steadily, it's quicker to get back to where you were than it was to get there the first time, even if you're starting from the same place again.

Hopefully I'll find out this year.

So I got on the magic scales of measuring all the things again this morning...

Weight: 76kg (okay - according to the scales, this is in the centre of the 'okay' (not high, not low) range for my height (177cm), gender (male), and age (40))
Muscle: 37% (okay)
Body-fat: 22.5% (okay)
Visceral fat: 7 (okay)
BMI: 24 (high end of 'okay' range) (Eh? When weight, muscle and fat are all central?)
Body age: 43 (gee thanks)
BMR: 1680 kcal

So yeah, as per last post, by the numbers I'm not doing so well - very very close to being back at my 'starting point' from early 2011. I can certainly see that I'm a fair bit fattier than I was in 2012, but on the other hand I can also see (and feel) that I'm a lot more muscular than I was then, so ... meh.

I tried cutting out sugar for a month back in April, to try to lose some of that body-fat percentage, but I failed abysmally to stick at it for more than a day or two at a time. I guess I should wear my chocolate cake belly-fat with pride. :)

I am curious as to what relative/average figures for my height, gender, and age would be though, rather than absolute/okay. I think I'm doing pretty well.

I might get some photos later and add them in here...

Last night I hopped on the scales; not something I do very often any more, now that my goals are more about performance than looks or weight. However, I have to admit I was a bit upset when they said that my body-fat is back up over 20% again now... first time that's happened since I first fought it down from 24% at the start of this whole body-shaping thing. My weight is up from 70kg to just under 74kg, and it looks like most of that increase has been fat rather than muscle.

Still, I was having plenty of fun freerunning this summer, and my weightlifting is going well so far this autumn (records set in the last fortnight: 80kg bench, 115kg squat, 130kg deadlift, 50kg shoulder press), so I'm trying not to worry about it too much. It did remind me that it's been a long time since I took some progress pics though, so I figured I'd do that today and see what's what. So here we go...

Semi-naked photos, proceed at own risk... )

... I think my boobs have got bigger. :-p

Not really a progress pic, as it's taken on a good day with favourable lighting and maximum tensing (and it's the best one from half a dozen attempts), but anyway... here's [an ideal form of] what my belly looks like this week:

Belleh! With just a hint of abs :) )

It's been a while (5 months) since my last set of progress pics. As per usual, I can't see much difference between those and the current ones (if anything I think I looked better in the last set), but perhaps I'll think differently in another six months time, who knows.

Photos of me in my underwear. I mean really, who wants to see that? )

"I think there is no better way to invite a human being to view their body differently than by inviting them to be an athlete, by revering one's body as an instrument rather than just an ornament. It's a really great way to reorient how you see your body so you can see it as this incredible, awe-inspiring machine that you need to fuel well in order for it to function."

Haven't updated for ages... nothing positive to report, but nothing particularly negative either - unless you class 'no results' as negative.

In other news, I went to a handstands class at Circus Space to see what it's like there. It seems like a cool place. The handstands class itself was harder than I'd expected (I'm probably at a base level of fitness for that place, which is humbling!), but it was fun anyway, so I'm going back next week and the week after, and will probably keep going to those alongside my general circus skills course there this summer, as long as I can afford it.

About time for progress pics again...

Mostly naked Denny behind the cut )

So, there we go. Looking at the previous set, from December, I seem to be a bit more defined around the stomach maybe? Small changes, but positive anyway. Happy about the posture improvement, hope that settles into my hindbrain eventually.
denny: (Plink... FOOM)
I've been feeling pretty good about how I look the last few days - stomach reasonably flat, muscles reasonable defined - if I do a few press-ups and pull-ups (so my muscles are a bit more defined) and then look in a mirror, I'd say I've basically hit my goals for visual appearance. Which is a pretty awesome thing to be able to say!

But... )

The other thing I want to start looking at more is gymnastic sort of stuff... now that I have this improved strength and fitness, I want to do cool stuff with it! I'm seriously considering signing up for a Circus Space course, as I'm lucky enough to live right next to the place.

Update: Just signed up to that course. Hopefully it'll be a fun way to spend the summer!

Pull-ups!

I finally figured out how to fake up a pull-up bar in my flat. This is excellent news for my lats - although they may not currently agree with that diagnosis, aching as they do :)

Haven't been writing here about the body-shaping stuff much lately, the reason for that is two-fold... Read more... )

In other news, I finally figured out how to fake up a pull-up bar at home, so I've done plenty of pull-ups this evening :) Turns out if you open the double-doors to the built-in cupboard in the corner of my bedroom, and then wedge a crutch across the top of both doors, it's about the right height and width for decent pull-ups - just have to tuck my legs up a bit to get full depth, not bad at all.

Finally, vaguely related to feeling fitter these days... I've been watching lots of parkour and free-running videos, and telling myself that it would be a really stupid thing for me to try, given the state of my leg. I keep telling myself, but I keep watching the videos and thinking 'well maybe if I was really careful'. No.

Absolutely not.

Maybe.

On NYE I did ... )

Not a bad effort, all in all. I completed 12 quests on Fitocracy, [personal profile] helenic got 14, [personal profile] bard got 13 and [personal profile] hythloday got 10.

body-shaping ... contains topless photos )

Tomorrow I'm off to eat Xmas dinner with my family, and then Boxing Day dinner with [personal profile] helenic's family. Should be a nice couple of days :) Have a good xmas if you do xmas, and otherwise have a good week in general. :)

Oh, and have a good New Year too. This New Year's Eve, in the daytime, I've organised a fitness-related party! Not sure if I'll have time to post between that and going out clubbing that night, but if not then I'll try to write it up early in January. We're going to try to complete as many Fitocracy quests as possible in one day... it should be quite silly. :-p

Okay, started making some progress again (I think)... body-shaping )

I eated it

I've started trying to keep track of what I eat on a Tumblr blog, to see if there are any obvious deficiencies or easy improvements I could make to back up the exercise I'm doing. So far I've just been trying to eat more protein and less chocolate and carbs, but not in any particularly systematic way...

Getting back into the exercising (including some personal training sessions) after a few months off, so thought I'd take some more photos as a reference point...

My flatmate is moving out soon, and the magic scales of body-fat measuring belong to him. So, I've bought some new ones... body-shaping )

GO GO GO

It's been all go here lately... the job is going okay, but commuting was such a total pain in the arse that I dug my old microscooter out from under the bed, blew off the cobwebs, and started riding that in. Same speed as the bus journey on an average day, but without the random and sometimes significant delays added by buses not turning up, buses turning up too full to get on, buses being diverted halfway across London, etc etc. And of course, I get some exercise every day this way!

body-shaping )

Finally, I got an invite to Fitocracy recently (thanks [personal profile] katieastrophe!) so I've started tracking what exercise I am doing on there. I have some invites left if anyone is interested in trying it, and obviously if any of you are already on there then please find and follow me so I can follow you back - my username on there is dennymeta
