On a whim, I decided to count up how many calories I'd eaten/drunk at work today...

1 x cheese and ham toasted sandwich - estimated 400 600 kcal
2 x Orange Lucozade - 266 each
1 x battered sausage and chips (from fish and chip shop) - estimated 600 1000 kcal
1 x isotonic drink - 136 kcal
2 x mini Cadbury's Dairy Milk - 80 each
1 pack of cheap strawberry fizzy sweets - 240 kcal

600 + 266 + 266 + 1000 + 136 + 80 + 80 + 240 = 2668

[Plus dinner, which I've now forgotten but was probably not entirely healthy.]

The Lucozade bottle helpfully informs me that 266 kcal is 13% of my RDA, so that makes the RDA about 2050? [Or maybe 2500? Or 3000? PRACE BETS NOW!] Clearly I have a well-optimised terrible balanced frightening whatever diet. *cough*

I would be astounded if the battered sausage and chips were under 1,000kcal, unless it was a particularly tiny portion and not the Fat Bastard Special that comes by default in my local chippy.

I was a bit unsure about that one - I googled a bit, but the results weren't very helpful.

Portions are fairly stingy, but I'll bump it up to 1000 anyway.

Er. Spot the ex-anorexic, but 2000 a day is for women. Blokes need at least 2500, depending on shape/height/size/musculature/activity level. The Minnesota experiment estimated daily calorie need of 3000-3200 for active men in their warly twenties...

Er. Sorry. *blush*

This is a useful calculator (http://www.dietitian.com/calcbody.php).

how do you categorise heavy lifting on that thing? 'Cause I'm pretty sure I need more than what it recommends for me, especially in cold weather. But maybe I'm just fat ;)

I think I'd have to actually do some heavy lifting to know the answer ;-)

Damn, and here I was hoping it was specified in some super sekkrit category I'd missed. I guess nobody ever thinks about those of us who play very heavy instruments for a living.

Interesting that the RDA on a Lucozade bottle is the one for women. I suppose they're regarded as being more likely to care.

I did think having an RDA for calories didn't really make much sense anyway - surely it's entirely dependent on what you're doing that day?

Yah. Also, lots of things burn unquantifiable amounts of calories, like problem-solving and worrying and experiencing intense emotions. Also, people have different metabolisms and burn calories at different rates. Calorie-counting is not a precise science, however much I wished it was for several years :)

I'm about 3/4 convinced that I burn off almost all of the chocolate and Lucozade I eat at work just by thinking very hard while I'm writing code.

Quite possibly. But do you think very hard while you're writing code as often as you eat sugary snacks and sweeties?

Probably not. That's why I said '3/4 convinced' and 'almost all' :)

I was all ready to come in and comment "tannie, that's good, but you're supposed to be gaining weight, so aim for a bit past the RDA". Then "oh, wait, that's not tannie's userpic".
Small world, or something?

I think you're underestimating certain things...

Dependent how much cheese in your sandwich, it's probably more like 500-600 calories (bear in mind that 25g cheese is 120 calories or so).

Battered sausage and chips is likely to be more in the region of 1,000 calories unless they were very well drained.

Sorry. :)

Post suitably revised. I was rather unsure about those two, just had a quick google and took the first vague consensus I could find.
