On a whim, I decided to count up how many calories I'd eaten/drunk at work today...

1 x cheese and ham toasted sandwich - estimated 400 600 kcal
2 x Orange Lucozade - 266 each
1 x battered sausage and chips (from fish and chip shop) - estimated 600 1000 kcal
1 x isotonic drink - 136 kcal
2 x mini Cadbury's Dairy Milk - 80 each
1 pack of cheap strawberry fizzy sweets - 240 kcal

600 + 266 + 266 + 1000 + 136 + 80 + 80 + 240 = 2668

[Plus dinner, which I've now forgotten but was probably not entirely healthy.]

The Lucozade bottle helpfully informs me that 266 kcal is 13% of my RDA, so that makes the RDA about 2050? [Or maybe 2500? Or 3000? PRACE BETS NOW!] Clearly I have a well-optimised terrible balanced frightening whatever diet. *cough*

Interesting that the RDA on a Lucozade bottle is the one for women. I suppose they're regarded as being more likely to care.

I did think having an RDA for calories didn't really make much sense anyway - surely it's entirely dependent on what you're doing that day?

Yah. Also, lots of things burn unquantifiable amounts of calories, like problem-solving and worrying and experiencing intense emotions. Also, people have different metabolisms and burn calories at different rates. Calorie-counting is not a precise science, however much I wished it was for several years :)

I'm about 3/4 convinced that I burn off almost all of the chocolate and Lucozade I eat at work just by thinking very hard while I'm writing code.

Quite possibly. But do you think very hard while you're writing code as often as you eat sugary snacks and sweeties?

Probably not. That's why I said '3/4 convinced' and 'almost all' :)
