Giving Americans access to [kill, capture and import] endangered animals, officials said, would feed the gigantic U.S. demand for live animals, skins, parts and trophies, and generate profits that would allow poor nations to pay for conservation of the remaining animals and their habitat.

Update: I should mention that there's a new community which will be covering some of the political stuff that tends to catch my eye... it's called [livejournal.com profile] globaldefence and covers any kind of dubious political interactions between countries, as well as things that affect the whole planet.

Yeah, came looking for you on IM to see if it fitted the brief. Is that community going to cover basically any of the political/social commentary stuff that I generally post? I got the feeling you were aiming broad for now...

Yeah, haven't got IM at work.

globaldefence basically covers anything to do with a country's relationships with other countries or the global environment. Since this story covers the US treating Africa (etc) as a sports shooting gallery, it fits my definitions.

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't manage to get that concise a definition of the goals from your original post(s) on the subject, although possibly because I was rushing through them rather than any weakness in their phrasing.

I've now cross-posted, it as you've probably already noticed.

I've only just thought of this... American uses a different spelling of 'defence' to English, possibly making it not an ideal word to use for naming a global community.

At the very least, it might be worth you squatting 'globaldefense' as a username and posting a 'no, over there' hint or two. Likewise for the domain name which I think you said you'd bagsied for later use.

I'm not sure namesquatting goes down too well on LJ...

I thought [livejournal.com profile] meowpurr[sic]'s use of it was quite good.

Canada and Australia spell it properly. New Zealand I don't know, but would guess same as Australia?

OK, in that case the "international" spelling works.
If international != USA, I ain't complaining ;)

Hrm. On further inspection (i.e. googling), it seems that they have spelt it correctly in the past, but are now moving toward American spellings as their cultures get whitewashed... particularly Canada, for obvious reasons of geographical proximity.
