One of my friends has just started [livejournal.com profile] loveisagoodbook, which seems like a good idea to me. As she said, I know there are plenty of book review communities out there already, but it'd be nice to have one that's mostly people you know or know of...

I'd buy that for a dollar. Been looking for somewhere to waffle about the stuff I paw through :)

I replaced the hard drive and that seemed to fix it. Obviously I've lost all my data from the old drive though, which is very annoying - I'm still trying to find time to run some recovery tools over that, see if I can retrieve anything.

what were your symtoms? Was your HD SATA or IDE?
Occurs to me that I have a new SATA drive and it wasn't doing this on my IDE one...

My PC died after a power-cut, presumably from the spike when the power came back on. The symptoms where that it didn't work until I replaced the disk :)

(although annoyingly I did buy a new motherboard initially, thinking that was the most likely thing to have failed)

It seems to have wiped just the Linux partition off the disk, which makes me wonder if maybe it's just the partition table info that's been corrupted, and I might be able to retrieve my data with the right tools.

The disks in this machine are SATA, although it does have IDE slots too.

Oh hang on, are you thinking of my old PC, that used to randomly reboot itself? I never did figure out what that was about.
