Just found instructions for changing X-Chat's tab completion for nicks back to the pre-2.0 'bash-style' behaviour. This has enhanced my IRC experience considerably... mIRC-style completion is teh suck.
To get the mIRC-style behaviour, it's 999 on the end (or $largish_number). There was an explanation given for this weirdness, but I didn't really take anything in past the 'how to get your old tab completion style back' line :) I think it sets how many nicks have to match the partial pattern before it prompts you BASH-style instead of cycling mIRC-style.
