"Le Petit Prince (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0156013983)" by Antoine de St-Exupery (french airman, delivery pilot, and hero, lost in WW2) is a modern classic french fable (that I happened to study as my oral discussion book at A-level). It appears to be a children's book, but is wonderfully profound with distinct surreal overtones (well, it's french).
