Dear lazyweb... I would like to buy 100% cotton sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases. In black (no patterns, no dark greys and definitely no navy blues - actual black, with optional black bits). Where should I be looking for them? Ta.

John Lewis - afaik it's the only place that does 100% cotton sheets in black.

M&S have nothing in black, John Lewis only have polycotton in black, and Debenhams have a rather nice Jasper Conran creation, only it's black with stripes. (Also, the Debenhams website is FUCKING AWFUL to navigate - you need to right-click and select "open" to follow any links...)

Yup, the Jonelle/John Lewis/Robert Sayle blacks (sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases) are (checking label) 50/50 poly/cotton, and they don't stock them in many stores any more. But they *will* order them in if you ask. But they're not 100%.

Their black towels are 100% cotton though.

e.g. 1, 2. We could not find anything in shops, and even John Lewis only went to dark colours in 100%, not black.

Both of those links give me "Item not found" - looks like a POST search instead of a GET.

Bah! I went to http://www.grattan.co.uk/ and entered "sheets" as the search. That should get you started.

Find a fabric store and a friend with a sewing machine and some time. All of the above are trivial to make, if you can sew.

Dye them yourself. What can possibly go wrong?!

That's what I was going to say. 100% cotton white is easy to find, so get some of that and then dye it in a washing machine (if you have one, or a bath if you don't). Easy. :)

As I recall, using black dye in a washing machine means that everything you wash in it for months afterwards had damn well better be black. I've been nervous about dying things in the bath ever since my black hair dye permanently stained my dad's bath when I was 17 :)

*shrug*
Wouldn't actually be much of a problem for me... ;)

As for staining the bath, it's a possibility. But then you could do it in a big bucket, or paddling pool, anything really. Pick up a cheap inflatable paddling pool for a fiver from Argos or something, won't matter if that gets a bit of black staining. then you'll also have a paddling pool for parties where the possibilities are endless... ;)

Not at all. If you use the Dylon machine dye, with the correct amount of salt per dye, and run it through on a 90 degree cycle afterwards, it's perfectly fine.

I've a pair of jeans I have to redye black every now and then, and I do them that way. And to no detriment to the non-black things I occasionally have to wash.

You're in London now so try the big John Lewis on Oxford St.
Maybe Camden Market (Stables) on a Sunday might have a stall or a shop in the arches up towards Chalk farm.
Tottenham Court road has a a few posh bed shops, they might either have some or know where to get them.
I've not tried online...there's always ebay...

Tried BHS? I know they do 100% cotton. Don't know about the black bit though.

Dye them. Dave can do it, so it can't be hard.

Linens Direct actually had quite a good selection in their store, and the Redhill store is tiny, so I'd guess they have more online (or in bigger stores). They also have the advantage of being incredibly affordable.
