Ooh.

Just opened my post and found a nice surprise - another cheque from my lawyers, the other side have forwarded £3000 as a second interim payment. Still nothing settled in the way of liability, but even if I'd taken their previous offer, they know they'd owe me more than this, so they've obviously decided to start chipping up now to make them look better in court (if it comes to that).

That lowers the stress level for this month by a significant fraction. I think I'll just pop into town and pay this straight into the bank.

The story behind the letter below is that there is this nutball in Newport, VT named Scott Williams who digs things out of his back yard and sends the stuff he finds to the Smithsonian Institute, labeling them with scientific names, insisting that they are actual archaeological finds.

This guy really exists and does this in his spare time. Anyway...here's the actual response from the Smithsonian Institution. Bear this in mind next time you think you are challenged in your having to respond to a difficult situation in writing.
