Do people think it would be reasonable for me to discard all email with the subject consisting solely of 'hi'? Would anyone other than spammers actually send email with just 'hi' as the subject line?

Hmm...I think I might have sent "hi" emails in the past, but I don't tend to now, because having used Telnet I'm now aware that a lot of email systems allow you to go down deleting all the things you don't want by pressing "D" a lot, so it might get lost.

Ooh, tricky one. I did occasionally send out emails entitled 'hi', but these days I tend to prefer the more conservative 'hello', and hence filtering out 'hi' would be OK. Especially since you could notify most people of your intent...

My sister sends email with the subject "hi". You may not receive email from her, but she's not actually a spammer.

Thanks for that... hrm, so real people do do it then.

Fortunately the question has been made irrelevant to me now after installing SpamAsssassin last night - it seems to be doing a great job of filtering stuff for me so far.
