denny: (Uncommon Sense)

In light of Microsoft's recent announcement about keeping third-party software off their networks, me and some other friends ended up taking another look at Jabber. Stuff seems to be coming along nicely, and the network is (imho) nearly as reliable as ICQ, more reliable than any of the other networks (AIM/Y!/MSN). So, I'm denny@jabber.org - anyone else got one to share?

MSN kept sending me messages through trillian telling me to 'update my messenger to 6.0' so I blocked them and they haven't bothered me since.
*chuckle*

Heh, nice one :)

I'm still letting them through on gAIM, I'm interested to know when they cut all the third-party Messenger users off. You do know you won't be able to use Trillian on the Messenger network soon, yes?

I have msn and yahoo both separately, it's just useful to have them all in one program. thanks. MSN messenger is becoming as insidious as IE.

Trillian Pro 2 Beta 2 rawks. *nods*

It shouldn't be effected by MSN throwing it's toys out of the pram in a few weeks - at least it's not told me to update yet....

Oh, Trillian are going to buy a licence? Wonder how much that's costing them...

Hmm. I'm thinking about it, but haven't had time to take another look.

What I *really* want is a linux command line based IM program, so I can log in from anywhere and I don't have to remember my contacts. The closest I have is ICQ2Go, which does the job, and most people have ICQ. But I'm aware it could well go the same way as MSN is trying to, so alternatives will have to be looked at soon. *sigh*

If you run your own Jabber server, you can also run protocol gateways on it that connect to ICQ, Y!, etc. That way the server holds your lists for each network, and you connect to the one jabber server from anywhere you have a jabber client and talk to your friends on all networks as per usual.

I've not tried this btw, I just know it's possible.

Oooh, interesting. May well merit more investigation, although it sounds a bit over-engineered from that description..

jabber.sk, and myjabber.net are two public servers with gateways. I use jabber.org.uk, but it's not open to new members any more. (calumx@jabber.org.uk, btw).. This lets me be on all the networks at the same time, with a choice of clients, etc..

And I find the jabber clients so much more lightweight and friendly than Trillian.. (personal choice, I know).

But the eventual plan is to run my own jabber server, with gateways. I hate relying on someone else's generosity for my IM needs.

Ok, and you can register with gateways for the other protocols on jabber.sk, even if your main jabber account is elsewhere. I use jabber.sk for yahoo.

It's dead easy, just use your jabber clients browser to browse to jabber.sk, select the yahoo/icq/msn service, and register. (if your jabber client doesnt have a browser, get a better one!)
