I just got an email telling me that a guy I knew online, an op in an IRC channel I also op in, died in a motorcycle accident earlier this week. I didn't know him that well to be honest, but we did have quite a good chat about biking in general just after my accident. It's hit me much harder than it normally would given the relatively loose association... I guess it's that "There but for the grace of $deity..." feeling.

We were driving the same route as what looked like a biker funeral last weekend - about 30 bikes all going slow in convoy. That was really spooky, because, as you say, it's all down to who is lucky and who isn't.
So far, nobody I know has actually died, although one guy had an extremely close call a couple of years back.
