On a more cheerful note, check out this outrageously cool fire poi picture that I found from a link [livejournal.com profile] ali_anarres posted in someone else's journal.

Update: Oh. My. God.
(apparently metal cages stuffed with wire wool and ignited make interesting fire poi... good lord)

Looking at the other pics in that album, I don't think she's doing fire poi (or fire juggling, which is what it says she's doing in the other pics). I think she's doing fire club-swinging... which is your newest trick, isn't it?

Um. Yes.

You are doing this safely, right? Assistant with fire extinguisher or suitable alternative, etc?? I don't know you all that well yet, it'd be a shame if you caught fire before we met again...

Yes. I'm doing this safely. Very firmly getting it sorted before I start any of the interesting stuff. Like, um...lighting it. I'm less of a nutter than I seem.

Probably. *Grin*

Same goes for the firebreathing...*Grrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiin*

Erm, no. Water usually isn't a good idea for putting out fires based on liquid fuels, you'd stand a good chance of spreading the fire further across the person. Hrm... thinking about it further, CO2 wouldn't be too good either, if you wanted the person to carry on breathing. So I suppose you'd want a foam extinguisher, or a blanket, for putting out fire poi mishaps.

I'm sure there are hints and tips on a website somewhere, might be worth looking it up! Actually, did this sort of thing get discussed at the juggling convention [livejournal.com profile] flannelcat?

I bet you will! Actually I'm kind of curious now, as to what is the recommended thing to have standing by...

I think I will stick with glow-poi, if I can find some... it seems a lot simpler, even if the trails aren't quite as pretty and the audience is less impressed  :)

The guy who taught me to fire-breathe recommended having a couple of wet towels/blankets on hand to smother things.

I know nothing about poi, but you'd have to be trying reasonably hard to set yourself on fire while firebreathing. Probably involving spilling a sizeable amount of paraffin (?) on yourself, then holding a flame to it.

Wet blankets/towels.
NOT water. Foam not recommended because it can block up your respiratory system. CO2 isn't good, the force with which it comes out can damage e.g. eyes, and is likely to spread the fuel about.

btw this is a common mistake from non-jugglers when they see clubs yes she is club swinging in all the pictures i looked at. i got called a juggler the other day when i was swinging in the park, i just giggled to myself. i suppose if people have never heard of it they just assume it's juggling when they see clubs but i can see a very obvious and big difference between the 2. the offer is still there to teach you some day.

i can see a very obvious and big difference between the 2

Two obvious differences spring to mind:
1. jugglers generally have three clubs, club swingers generally have two...
2. jugglers are continually throwing their clubs in the air, whereas club swingers don't ever (?) let go of them...

Still, it took me a few looks at those pictures to figure out if they were just odd camera angles and the third one was in the air above her head or something  :)

considering she never had her hands off the clubs in the pics and in the motion picture she happened to be doing a pattern i know i knew straight away. of course i never let go of my clubs!!! tee hee. well i don't anymore. for some reason there are still silly people in the world who can't notice the difference between the 2. lol. if you know of a free weekend sometime in the future let me know and maybe we can meet up. i know it a bad time atm tho.
*hugs*

Would be good to meet up again at some point, yeah. Certainly doesn't look like I'll be driving/riding to visit anyone for a while though, the way life is going!  :-\

there used to be one in oxford but then the guy closed down and moved to the camden shop. he made my clubs for me before he left as they need to be slighty different to juggling clubs. i also got my glowing diablo from there.
