ETA2:
If you don't mind playing with svn and Perl, everything you need to save your journal data (posts and comments) as XML is here:

Did anything ever come of the open source alternative to LJ? Think I shall just archive my journal in case, as this doesn't bode well.

LJ is open source. What's needed is a federated alternative to LJ.

There was a bunch of discussion on the dreamwidth-dev list at the early stages of the project (I may have started it :) ) about how much interoperability would be possible to build in for sites running the DW codebase. The interest levels seem to be there, but probably not enough developer time - the core devs are doing more core stuff (splitting 'friends' to be 'trusted' and 'reading', for instance).

You mean the Dreamwidth project, I assume? They're still ticking along... the news has spurred them into shifting up a gear.

That's the one, I knew LJ was open source, but remembered there being an alternative that was run for the community.

I've seen LJ Book (http://www.ljbook.com/) recommended for doing LJ backups, but I haven't tried it. I don't think there's currently any way to import your LJ content into another site, but that is one of the goals of the Dreamwidth project.

yeah I used LJ book last year. I'll have to do another one for 2008. Looks like too many people are using the site now though! lol

There's also this thing, it doesn't look very polished but it does seem to have a lot of options:

See http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=8 to manually export your LJ. Annoyingly you have to do it month by month...

Thanks for the pointer to jbackup.pl - it would have been an arse to have to write that myself.

Who knows, if Dreamwidth ever happens, I might even journal again.

The quirky site, part blog and part social network, is best known for its users' weird obsessions — like the troublesome clique of Harry Potter erotica writers, whose outré tastes ran afoul of LiveJournal's efforts to comply with U.S. child-pornography laws.

Oops?

How about if I don't understand svn and perl? Abandon ship?
