Today I got dead-tree spam from the British Humanist Association. I'm wondering if this was a side-effect of donating to the Atheist Bus thing - if so, surely that's going to wind people up? If not, I can't figure out where else they'd have happened upon me (I'm assuming it's targeted, given my general sympathy to their cause).

Did anyone else who donated to the bus get a 'join us now' pack in the post?

It's a targeted mailing. I don't think the data from the ABC was used for this but I can't be sure - I will check at work on Friday.

Edit: I have your answer. No, as I thought, the data from the ABC was not used - and in fact couldn't have been, since we only got the email addresses of donors, not postal addresses.

The address list from the mailing came from a number of sources including subscription lists from other charities and publications with a similar ethos or demographic to the BHA, including the human rights charity Liberty and New Scientist magazine.

If you tell me the code that was on the mailing I can tell you what the data source was for your address so you can ask that organisation not to release your details in future.

Most likely New Scientist then - they're responsible for at least 80% of my postal spam.

PS: don't want any either. When I have a job I'll join the BHA, but not before.
