The Metropolitan Police have released the beta of their crime-mapping website, which lets you look at the overall crime stats for an area:
http://maps.met.police.uk/

Searching for both my home and office postcodes reveals 'very high' crime-rate areas starting just to the south of each (like, metres away). A moment's thought returns the interesting fact that 'just to the south' is where the vast majority of the pubs and bars in each area are located. I would just love to see a mash-up of this data and 'places that serve alchohol to the public' density data. And then I'd like to see the government take notice of the correlation and ban alcohol. Maybe they could legalise marijuana and MDMA instead*?

Hey, it's for the good of the neighbourhood! Won't somebody think of the children?? :-p

* I don't notice people who use those getting into too many fights. Sweaty hugs maybe, but not fights.

Been saying that for almost 20 years. Never been one for pubs and used to hate having to walk home through masses of pissed scousers. Never had grief in clubs, always liked the atmosphere so much more, although I did notice a change in the early 90's when many of the clubs that were not exactly operating legally finally went mainstream, got drink licences and suddenly you had alcohol in them. Mind you, it was still a minor thing, drunks just can't keep pace with a rooom full of pilled up ravers :)

I've found since moving to London in April that the Met Police aren't the sharpest tool in the box. Looking at their press releases, you'd think nothing much when on in the whole of London apart from the occasional drive by shooting or murder or a recluse.

Oi :) That's my living you're talking about there...

Otoh, I run a real ale pub. I've only had to ask two people to leave in the year I've been here, and on neither occasion did I have to actually throw them out. The VDEs are a whole different ball game.
