Unfortunately "being an aggravating imbecile" is the documented and expected behaviour for recruiters, and it's considered unsporting to expect any other sort.

My advert currently ends with these two lines:

UK residents only please, and direct applicants only. That means NO AGENCIES, thank you.

THIS INCLUDES YOU, Susan Hailstones at People Direct. NO AGENCIES. Not even you.

Slander only pertains to the spoken word - while it's obvious in context that she means libel, that's no reason not to pick nits. :)

Also, slander and libel both refer to defamation. According to Wiki:
In law, defamation is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may harm the reputation of an individual, business, product, group, government or nation. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slander)
I see nothing in the last two lines of the advert that conveys an untruth...

That's not even libellous, is it? You aren't saying anything about her you can't prove. Plus also it took her a while to notice :)
We had comedy emails today; one from a pornster we chucked off the forums for constant trolling who later slanfdered me on yahoogroups, whinging that we were hosting her pictures in breach of copyright - causing us to point out that in fact we don't host any images other than of products, and on insane person emailing us incoherently ranting about how we dont like sex y pictures. You know us, totally anti teh sex.
We emailed him back to say we were utterly at a loss to understand what the hell he was on about.

Fantastic. I saw your original post and boggled at her, now I giggle every time I reread this post.

Which would explain why she's being so vague in her complaint and essentially just throwing her toys out of the pram.

I think I'm going to add something like the following to my job ads:

NO AGENCIES. Not even to ask if we've changed out mind about the "NO AGENCIES" rule. If we change our mind, we'll change this ad. It takes us even less time to do that than it takes us to blacklist your company.

There is nothing ilegal about your request for her not to contact you.
It would be different if you had written stupid bint, or slagged off her or her agency but you haven't and therefore does not constitute libel, or defamation of character.
