denny: (Ouch!)

The swelling in my leg is pretty much all gone now... which means that, given my usual state of excessive skinnyness, you can feel screw heads quite clearly through various parts of my skin. The ones on the front of my shin-bone are now so obvious that I think I've sussed out what kind of screws they use, and I thought you all needed to know that they're cross-heads.

I suspect this lot is going to have to come out at some point, otherwise they're quite likely to just erode their way through into the light of day, which would be deeply unpleasant. I'm not looking forward to yet another general anaesthetic though, nor to the presumably weakened state of my bone when they withdraw 14 screws that are currently running through it - surely that will leave it resembling swiss cheese in some respects? Oh well... "Que sera, sera".

Oh, damnit. First time in ages I've wanted to be on speaking terms with my father, because he had his collarbone screwed back together about five years ago. He used to have the screws in a little jar but I don't know if he threw them out or took them with him.

I do remember him saying that by far the most painful part was the original site on his hip where they took the bone from to fill in the gap in his collarbone.

I also remember him being in a sling and not able to shave for about three weeks afterwards, but he didn't complain about it much. (And believe me, he was the sort to complain about the slightest little thing.)

I'm still miffed I didn't get to keep my appendix, and that was nearly 11 years ago.

I didn't want to read that.

Hello, hope you don't mind I added you?

Hello... another victim of the cultural void that is MK, I see. Adding me is entirely okay, as is changing your mind after reading my drivel for a while :)

Yes, 'fraid so; there does seem to be a lot of us. You dislike it as much as I do, then, from the sound of it?

Actually I'm torn... I kind of like living in MK, except for the complete lack of non-trendy clubs. I'm probably moving to London next year, just so I can live nearer to some decent nightlife...

I spy Gir :-)

but what's there to like about the city, seriously? what do you consider to be its pros?

And, yes, the lack of clubs is glaringly obvious really. I just travel up to Northampton instead.

As for wanting/planning to move to London, I don't blame you: so many people seem to travel up there constantly, one person I know actually does so almost every single weekend without fail (it's alright for some..).

Green spaces spread all through the town, extremely good road system, reasonable shopping as long as you don't want anything unusual. That's about it, admittedly, but I think the first one engenders more of a feeling of quiet contentment than most people realise... living in a seriously built-up area can be quite unpleasant after a while. The house prices around here aren't too bad either, compared to places like Cambridge or London especially.

Most of the people I know who dislike MK have grown up here. Some of them moved away, and after a few years, they came back, proclaiming how horrible the rest of the country is :) I've lived in quite a lot of towns and cities, and I think MK is amongst the most pleasant, if sadly dull. It wouldn't surprise me if I come back here after a few years in London...

Would be nice to find somewhere decent to buy clothes though without having to travel to Cambridge or London (and to a certain extent Bedford).

Hrm... I buy black Levi 501s from John Lewis ('Never knowingly undersold'), plain black t-shirts from Tesco for £2.50 a go (!), and occasionally get items of fetish clubbing apparel from the shop in Conniburrow or more often in Camden market.

I guess I'm not much of a clothes person really :)

I used to be saved this hassle by having Esquires in Bedford, but in the last 6 years since I went regularly it seems to have turned into a kindergarten. Shame really. They had some good bands on.

I do missing living in Leeds for all the bands and clubs available. I've just been looking for some vague hint of gigs in the area and can find nothing in Cambridge, Bedford, Milton Keynes or Northampton. Very disappointing.

Depending on what size and genre of band you want, Cambridge seems to do okay for live music. Certainly the local band scene throws up a gig or two most months, plus there is the Corn Exchange which has the occasional worthwhile thing.

You might want to sign up to the CamGoth list here:

And possibly the Cam Uni RockSoc list here:

[livejournal.com profile] the_lady_lily and [livejournal.com profile] the_aviator have suggested I go to The Calling. I will do one of these days. I did check The Junction and the Boat Race, but didn't see anything. I could just go to a Saturday night thing and hope for the best from the local bands.

I tend to find that most people that live in Milton Keynes like it, but those from outside hate it. I guess we have just learnt how to use a roundabout. I would love to see someone get across Bristol (or any other british city) in 5 minutes and traveling at 70mph.[0]

[0] Yes this does assume a car-orientated point of view.

It assumes personal vehicle ownership, yes... my preference is for one with less wheels, at least in the summer :)

MK was built in a 20 year window in the 20th century, after they realised everyone would be able to afford a car one day, but before they realised the amount of problems this would cause... it's left it with quite a monumental set of problems for the guys at the council who are in charge of public transport etc, but it does work just fine for those of us with driving licenses :)

By the way, if you want to know why I have screws in my leg, you have to check out the 'x-rays' and 'scars' links on the right, and stuff under 'accident' in my memories...

not that it matters now anyway, as those weren't half as bad as I was expecting. Not diminishing the severity of your accident, as those x-rays were scary as hell, but, for some unknown reason, I was expecting a multitude of photos like # 3, the inner calf. The scars on display in the second photograph are really rather pretty though; very interesting, I like. The insides of legs, however, I'm not so keen on.. you poor, poor man.
