Just got email from my employer... looks like they're going to make me redundant rather than wanting me back when my leg finishes healing.

Oh well. I suppose I didn't like it there anyway... but this really isn't going to help with the debts I'm running up while I'm off sick - the insurance claim is going to drag on for years before it pays anything out.

Anyone know of any interesting opportunities for Perl hackers?

did your employment contract not include any provision for extended time off work other that the Statutary Minimum?

20 days full pay at management discrection. I've had all they're giving me, which was about 15 days give or take a bit. They don't like me very much since the whole depression thing last year, which to be fair did cost them at least a few weeks of me doing bugger all of any use.

Oh no, that sucks :(

Do you have redundancy insurance on your debts, or at the very least will your company give you a decent pay-out?

No and no. :)

My mortgage interest payments are covered, I don't think anything else is though. Work don't like me, so certainly won't stretch to anything above the contractually obliged month's notice. I think they'll have trouble making me work the month though, as they're going to be making me redundant on the grounds that there's no work for me, so at least I'll have that out of them for nothing, hopefully.

They're obliged to give you your notice, plus if they're technically making you redundant and you've been there for (I think) at least a year (maybe two), they have to give you one week's pay per year worked (although legally that's capped at £250 per week). The redundancy compensation is tax-free. It might not be much but every little bit helps...

Bugger. I don't know anything about the laws surrounding this, but you should contact your lawyer and include contributing to the loss of your job to the claim. This is going to get big and messy.

*hugs*

You think it'll count for anything? Hrm. Won't hurt to tell her, I suppose.

*goes to send email*

Oh, yes. Definitely do it. If the cunt is going to get out of dangerous driving for reversing right across a main road just because you were going 5 miles over the speed limit, then bloody land him for all you can get.

Now's the perfect time to move to London, then! All the best people do, you know!

(seriously - this is probably the best place to find a job with your skills - there can't be that much in/around MK)

I'm not adverse to the idea, although the practicalities could get messy - selling my house being the main one. I'd want to find work before I put the house on the market, so I'll either need to heal up before I can commute before I can job-hunt, or look out for a job that lets me work from home the vast majority of the time until I'm walking again...

Bastids. Much as this sort of thing can give you a boost into something new, their timing ain't great.

I suggest you join the London.pm mailing list, which occasionally has job offers, but should at least give you some background info:
