Rebooted my desktop two hours ago in the process of trying to get the wireless working here, and found that something I'd 'upgraded' over the last month or two (a kernel package at a guess) had actually completely hosed X (thank you nVidia and your accursed non-open-source drivers). Spent the last two hours trying to get it working again. Sometimes I can see the appeal of Windows... at least until I try to use it to do, well, anything.

[livejournal.com profile] libellum's laptop saw my wireless network once, when she first scanned for networks, but is now refusing to recognise its existence since she connected to the neighbour's unsecured wireless. Does Windows have some kind of 'forget about the networks you didn't use last time' default behaviour? I can't figure out why it was there and now it's not. We've performed the usual reboot dances and so on, and still no sign of the network that was briefly available a few hours ago. *head-desk, head-desk, head-desk*

Anyway, it's looking like the wireless isn't going to work, and it turns out I don't have the requisite amount of network cards to go the cabled route, so there's a medium to high chance that my online activities will be, well, offline, for at least a day or two, possibly a week or two (for those not keeping track, I go into surgery in about 12 hours, so getting out of bed may not be my strong point for a while).

On the bright side, I spent 70 quid on books today, so at least I won't be bored. See y'all on the flip side.

i don't have wireless here so i can't check the dialogs, but there should be a prefered networks tab somewhere, iirc within the network device's properties dialog, to select the priority of wireless networks that you connect you.

if that's what you're refering to. no idea about making your own wireless work though without being there i'm afraid.

Good luck with the surgery. I doubt it's much but if there's anything I can do to help, Libellum has my number.

If you didn't get X working again, have you rerun the nVidia driver install program? We find we have to rerun it every time we upgrade a kernel package on the machines with nVidia graphics at work.

Yeah, I re-ran it a few times and it picked up again in the end. There were some nasty interactions going on between the debian stuff that had been upgraded and the nVidia stuff that was left behind, it took a few shakes to get them to settle down at the same level :)

We both have pour fingers crossed that surgery will go excellently well and you will feel great afterwards.

nVidia

Cripes. Why would anyone name a product something echoing "invidious"?

Hope surgery goes smoothly. Let me know if you want me to come round and poke at your network at some point.

Good luck, I'm sure everything will be fine :) Will be thinking of you, please take care of yourself (well, actually, make sure other people do it for you; they can stand around and feed you peeled grapes and things whilst, ideally, in "suitable" clothing and all that..). Hope you have a speedy recovery.

And, more importantly, what books did you buy? ;)

Good luck - I hope it goes well. Also I hope that your network is sorted. If you need cables I have a connector that allows you to join two cables together. I also have some fairly long cables. I can't remember if they are 3 or 5 meters, but that means with the connector either 6 or 10 meters, if that's any help?

I suspect this is rather too late for any use, so I will wish you well anyway.

If your network is WPA2, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the WPA2 hotfix (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,30721,00.asp) on [livejournal.com profile] libellum's laptop. I had this problem with other windows laptops trying to connect through the Advanced Network Settings (i.e. manually rather than scanning).

Yeah. Any time you touch the kernel you must recompile the nVidia drivers into it - it could be picking up an older kernel source tree, so check that you only have one and both the symbolic link at /usr/src/linux and the nVidia installation program are pointing to the right tree. If in doubt, uninstall and reinstall the kernel sources.

I have a cable that goes the length of the flat - what I lack is a second ethernet card in the desktop so that I can share its (ethernet-connected) cable modem via that kind of network. I do have a wireless card in the desktop, but it's being fussy.

I actually had a half-breakthrough just after posting, so maybe I'll figure it out once I'm up and about again.

... and feed you peeled grapes and things whilst, ideally, in "suitable" clothing and all that ...

That's a very kind offer - when would you like to visit? :-D

what books did you buy?

Ooh, um. A whole bunch of sci-fi/fantasy: the Black Magician trilogy; two Stainless Steel Rat books (Goes To Hell and Joins The Circus); Atom (by Steve Aylett); Spanky (by Christopher Fowler); Dracula Unbound; Going Postal.
