My new Xmas present from work just got delivered:

SHINY BLUE LED JOY!

Extra geeky joy points for finding out that it can be run either in full binary mode, with the display running horizontally, or in binary coded decimal with the display running vertically.

Sadly it's really small, I thought it was going to be about four times this size, but anyway, it's still very shiny. I tried explaining to my boss how to tell the time with it, and he looked very confused and slightly pained. :)

That's gorgeous. I'm so glad you went with one a bit like their present attempt!

It felt a bit foolish passing up on an opportunity for an 80 to 100 quid present in favour of a 30 quid one, but in the end it seemed like the nicer (and more politically sound) thing to do. My other boss did look quite pleased when he realised that I'd got something very similar to what they originally chose, which was nice to see.

Oohh.. Cool!

But..
How do you tell the time with it?

In binary :) Counting right to left, or top to bottom, depending on whether you're running it in binary or BCD mode.

In BCD mode, if the time is 12:46:23, the first row would add up to give you the 1, the second row would add up to give you the 2, the third row the 4, fourth row the 6, fifth row the 2 and sixth row the 3.

Argh. Column, not row, for BCD. :)

And bottom to top, not top to bottom. Not that I'm tired or anything. *yawns and curls up under desk*

So geeky, yet so cool ;)

Does it cast a pretty blue light in a dark room?

I would imagine so - the LEDs are quite big and very bright blue.

Niiice.

I had a screensaver for my G4 which did the same thing. One of these days I'll buy my dad one of those - the ultimate present as it's geeky AND will annoy the evil stepmum ;)

I was originally bought an 80 quid binary watch, but had to ask work to return it because I don't wear watches - and particularly not bulky ones. Hence the clock.
