I don't blame you, it's a nice box... with no monitor, huzah!

And they have payment terms... so I can spend more than I wanted to... oh dear.

The CPU upgrade options you can configure it with run up to the FX55, so I'm assuming it's whatever the latest AMD64 socket is... I'm pretty out of touch with hardware at the minute though.

Probably. You want 939 if you're spending that much; it's a lot faster. The memory should come in pairs and be accessed with twice the bandwidth.

Um.. not to piss on your parade but PCI Express is not worth splashing out on at present.. rather like SATA. Additionally, the graphics card is the cut down version. You want a 6800 GT.

Also, Mesh don't tend to worry about the amount of sound their machines make as say Dell or Compaq.

As I don't play much in the way of games, and couldn't care less about fan noise (my current system is running caseless), the latter points aren't major considerations for me.

I'm guessing PCI-E is worth getting now on the grounds that I'm unlikely to upgrade my base machine again for a while after this...?

They'll be online purchase only, I believe. Probably worth you looking at their whole site though, as the linked machine isn't really business spec. You could actually get something better suited for quite a lot less money...

Check out the MESH Recommended deals for a starting point, but I think they have a whole 'home office' section too...

My personal feeling is that so many things change nowadays that buying a system to be futureproof is not really feasible. For example, the power standard (ATX) is changing, meaning differently designed cases, power supplies and motherboards; like AGP and SATA there will almost certainly be faster versions of PCI Express coming.

The only things (IMHO) worth spending money on that will last a while are peripherals like monitors.

At the end of the day, as long as you feel it's a good deal and you're not wasting money on something you won't use (eg. the graphics card which will likely account for £200 of the system) then buy what you want :)
