Ahh that reminds me....I'm doing a party for a friend in June 05. The location is a Manor house, the party will be inside a 150 year old barn " very atmospheric " I thought Fire Poi outside as the guests arrive would be really kewl. The guy is a friend so I'm laying on the toys at " mates rates " ..How much for you to come and set your balls on fire periodically through the night, and then enjoy the party ?
I'm sure we can tot that kind of thing up to the mutual favour and friendship network - it's not like I don't enjoy spinning :) Just let me know the date at least a couple of months in advance so that I don't arrange to be elsewhere.
I have a friend I can invite along too if you want? She's prettier than me ;) and about as good at poi - she's the other person spinning in those pics. We're working on a double act that crosses the fireloops through each other... bit nerve-wracking at present, but hopefully it looks good, or at least entertainingly unwise :)
All you have to supply is a large amount of paraffin or a moral equivalent (I think it's parasone that I use, but I'm not sure). I get through about a tenth of a litre each time I spin, I think.
Once me and my friend have done a bit of practical experimentation, we might be up to doing wire-wool poi as well... that looks bloody dramatic: http://www.homeofpoi.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=235
Kewl,,,,Must admit I was hoping that would be the answer, but if you get any enquiries on the night...say you are charging. this guy is a mate, so I'm doing the mates thing as well ( Haven't dones a good party for a while )...Yup freind is good, the only other time I saw poi there were two people who would alternate and tehn do a " double act " the double act was far more exciting, even when they wern't placed in the same spot....I will pass your post on to the host...and presume he will extrend all courtesies ( food drink etc ) That statement was a little futile as he is doing that for everyone attending any way...
All fire poi obviously outside the listed timber barn...:)
The setting is very dramatic, must get some pics...maybe put you guys a few feet up in the air along the drive as people arrive..what a welcome !!! hmmm Mc Donalds moment..I'm lovin it
Sorry , I'm a bit wired from last nights gig... with view to "mates rates " at least get transport covered, the Manor house is used as b+b so will try to get you and friend a room for the night in return for " great balls of fire "
Yeah, obviously not having any transport of my own any more, it would be good if someone could either get me there and back, or cover whatever I have to pay out on travel. That and fuel is all I'm really bothered about, but a night in a manor-house B+B sounds plush if it's offered!
Spoke to host again today...Yup travel coost no probs, not sure if the Manor house will be open that weekend, ( it's owned by his inlaws, and from what I gather he intends to have the party on one of their many weekends away ) but, although there will be camping next to the Barn, the host has said he can put you up in his house ( about 100 yards from the barn )...
Does he want us to bring the fuel with us and he'll pay me back for it? How long do you want us to be spinning for, roughly speaking? I need to do some counting on my fingers, but I think we're only talking something like £5 or £10 an hour in fuel used. I'm rounding up a bit there from our present usage, as I'm planning on getting some bigger poi for the occasion, to make bigger brighter longer-lasting flames :)
He saw the pics I snet him...first thing hew said to me this morning was ..." W.O.W " I don't think he really understood my description of poi....er.will get him to get the fuel, saves you having to travel with it...
er ok..general thoughts and of course pending mobility of DennyD's injury.
Not sure what time the guest are going to arrive..guessing around 8 -9 pm...I thought it would be kewl as they arrive if we had two platforms about 4 - 5 feet high, either side of the drive nearer the barn, I know it won't be reallly dark, but thought it would make a kewl visual / atmos builder, as you will be seen from the entrance tothe drive about 1/4 of a mile away...
The barn " as you would expect " has two massive barn doors which pending good wether will be open throught the party which leads onto a farm courtyard, so occaisional displays outside, if bods are mingling outside would be kewl...also on the other side of the barn directly opposite is like a lean too roofed area which will also be open and have tables and chairs there, can't remember the view but I think as a backdrop is a bit more dramatic.
Duration is really up to you. I thought the dramatic entrance would really " up the anti ", and occaisional dabs through the night would be good.
If you wanted to make a big showpeice out of it, and wanted the dj to play a specific tune and direct people to a pre arranged spot then we can do that...
Realll pity it's too much of a risk inside, it would look great with all the old beams and shadows...but....no no no
If you know any other like minded " artistes " stilwalkers , human puppets , walk a rounds, please let them know or give them my contact details...I'm hoping we can all have a good time, but maybe score a few gigs as well.
Were those from the ones I linked at the top of this thread?
will get him to get the fuel, saves you having to travel with it
Oh yeah, good thinking. I hadn't considered that aspect...
Not sure what time the guest are going to arrive..guessing around 8 -9 pm [...] I know it won't be reallly dark
Will it not? That's a shame... it really loses a lot of its visual impact in daylight. Not sure how fast it picks up as dusk sets in though, I've never spun through from day to night before.
I thought it would be kewl as they arrive if we had two platforms about 4 - 5 feet high
Heh, this is going to be so cool :-D
We'll want room to move around on them, you don't generally stand still while you're spinning poi. *thinks* Probably want at least 10 foot across I suppose, given that we can't have any safety railings around them (would probably tangle the poi). Hrm. How are we going to make sure the edge is nice and visible as it gets dark? I don't want any more broken legs :)
Speaking of which, I'm sure I'll manage to get up on a platform at that kind of height, as long as there's a few bits of scaffolding to clamber on. I managed to get up in my loft last week aided only by the bannister.
you will be seen from the entrance to the drive about 1/4 of a mile away...
Nice :)
Duration is really up to you.
I guess we'll have both of us spinning on the platforms most of the time until most people are there, the first hour or two or whatever. After that we'll probably have either of us spinning at ground level more or less as often as our arms and fuel supplies allow, within reason. Wouldn't want people to get bored of us.
I don't think we'll do anything in the way of a set piece - we're not that professional/organised - but we'll spin together a couple of times I would imagine. Not really sure what standard we'll be at by next summer, we've both improved so much this year that it's hard to say. Should be good enough to keep people going 'ooh' occasionally anyway.
Realll pity it's too much of a risk inside, it would look great with all the old beams and shadows...but....no no no
Yeah, I don't fancy burning down any listed buildings :)
Do you want me to put word out to people I know through juggling clubs etc, or just people I know more-or-less personally? Whereabouts is this thing happening anyway?
Oh yes, regarding entertainments inside the barn... although fire isn't an option, I do have the glowing juggling balls which you've seen in the flesh. so I can at least do a bit of juggling indoors if you think that would be good. Also, I'm working on a way to attach those balls onto chains to use as poi, I've seen them used that way by other people and it looks pretty good in the dark. Depends how much room there is in the barn of course.
Stage size...hem several options here...ranging from my scaff tower.6 ft x 4 ft to " stage deck ", any multiple of 1220 mm x 2400 mm, the logistics of getting you " elevated " is not really a problem either way.
er re " party people " only interested in people you can vouch for, security is a factor along with my reputation to a whole new bunch of potential clients, who also take security seriously.
Yup juggling is good, well great really, but don't want you to be under pressure to entertain all night, which is why I was asking who else you might know....
From memory the second set of doors to the barn have quite a dramatic view, am contemplating two higher platforms " in the distance " would make great picture from inside the barn...( there is a quad bike you can use to get to them ) 9 might be kewl to shoot the laser from a " beyond point to encapsulate you both, will check logistics of power supply )
Yeah understand no handrails on platforms...will mark edge of platforms somehow... ( Stage deck is black with white sprayed border around edge )
Talking to fire safety guys next week about this project ( I only have enough fire fighting equip for my own gear ) do you want a couple of foam or gas extinguishers for your " play station s " ) ( Suggest 1 x 8kg Blue + 1 x Blanket )
If " FrozenMist " is available, would be good to get him down to take some photo's for " your/ our use " I don't know any other photographers ?
The tower will be too small to be safe, I'm pretty sure, so we'll want to make something out of the decking. White edging sounds good.
I'm happy to juggle some while I'm wandering around... like I said, we'll not be playing continuously because people will get too used to it, but we'll fire up or do something interesting occasionally throughout the event. It's fun to get noticed :)
Higher platforms for later in the night are fine by me as long as we figure out a way to get me up onto them :)
Fire blankets are a must - I'd say two, one tied to a corner of each platform, because when your hair catches light you really want to find the thing quickly :) I'm not familiar with types of extinguisher, so I'll take your advice there. Usually if you light yourself with poi, you drop and roll, but that won't do much good on a wooden platform. A big container of water to drop the firetoys in if they get unruly would probably be a good thing to have around too, just in case.
I've emailed our friendly photographer with a link to this thread to ask if he's interested. I do know a couple of other photographers, do you want me to ask them as well?
