Went to Spitz last night to practise poi (and stuff). Hopefully I'll be doing this most weeks from now on - I miss the fun I had playing in the park with all my toys before I got employed again (although on balance, the salary does offer a fine form of compensation for my otherwise tragic loss).

I've bruised the hell out of my calf muscles, but I think I've just about figured out how to do the weave behind my back now. Also I suddenly figured out the trick to push-throughs, although I think it's going to take me a while longer to persuade my arms to ignore the (wrong) timing that my instincts want to use for them, and instead leave them that extra half-beat until they'll actually work.

I also got a random Australian guy past his first poi-learning hurdle, with a bit of coaching and demonstration - so hopefully he'll be happier for his night's efforts too. All in all, a nice evening. Even with the hour-long tube journey each way.

Today at work I had to install a whole load of server software on a Windows XP laptop and get two different content management engines running on it (one .NET and one Perl/MySQL), as well as continuing my battle with a horrendously poorly implemented stats package on a 2k3 server. This was not a pleasant set of tasks. My loathing of Windows had subsided into a gentle distaste recently, but in the face of actually trying to do anything useful with it I'm now back to full-blown hatred. I have a horrible feeling that I'm going to be lumbered with an increasing amount of Windows sysadmin work until we find a replacement for the guy who's leaving this week.

Tomorrow the bosses are going to take us all out and buy us food and drinks, so I guess I'll let them live. For now. No-one wants to disturb my Perl/XML hacking session tomorrow though, especially not with the word 'Windows'.
