A friend of mine got an interesting assignment for her photography BTec this week. She has to do a self-portrait... without her in the shot.  She's currently accumulating things that she thinks define 'her' and arranging them in interesting patterns...

I thought it might be interesting to consider what I'd like to put in a self-portrait of this type, and to hear what other people might pick to represent themselves too...

  • Laptop.  I am first and foremost a geek - there's no denying it.
  • Motorbike.  I'll always be a biker, even when I don't own a bike... and right now I happen to own a very nice one  :)
  • Leather jacket.  Clothing seems such a shallow thing to define yourself by, but then it is what most people's first impression of us is probably based on... and I wear a leather both because of the bike and because of the subcultures I lurk within (metal, goth, fetish, etc).

I guess that's me done.  Did I miss anything obvious?

Hmm, interesting. I would have chosen similar things to represent myself, but those things are intricate enough by themselves to warrant being the subject of a photograph by themselves. I would choose something that represented my interests, symbolised for example. A scrap of leather, arranged or perhaps entwined with a stick of RAM and maybe the back-end of a wooden model motorcycle I have. Perhaps even take it close up so that the far end of the RAM and leather is out-of-focus, representing how it's difficult to see how far my personality stretches in that direction.

Hmm, quite inspiring :) Might have to do something like that.. but I doubt it would make an icon :/

Also, I need to get a digital camera too lol. In the mean time I can borrow a friend's.. :)
