Post-doctorate research in the field of image processing. I think he was involved in the 'eye' software for one of the Mars robots, for instance. He also rewrote a bloody great chunk of the Matrox drivers for X-Windows once, so that his research project of the time would run quicker :)
I also first thought - "Nice setup, shame about the chair." Then I thought - that should be enough to play Doom 3 / Half-Life 2 at a decent resolution. ;-) You can tell I own a house that is nick-named "Fortress Geek", can't you?
