At the age of nine we'd been asked to write the alphabet backwards by a teacher. Everyone was scratching their heads and taking their time, except me. I started with 'A' and then wrote right to left. Unbeknownst to me I was being watched from behind and as I finished, she snatched the piece of paper off my desk and held it aloft.

"Do you all know what Marcus just did?" My heart sank like a stone, "He wrote backwards, not forwards."

Everyone was staring at me, some smirking as she then surprised them with "Why is he the only one of you that thought of that?"

She put the paper back down and whispered chuckling to me: "Now do it properly."

The lesson of the day was: Anyone who says you're too clever by half is too stupid by a third.
