[livejournal.com profile] earle asked:
> What's on your desk right now, monitor/keyboard/mouse/laptop excluded?

'Humourous' sign. Two boxes of my business cards. PC speakers. Phone. Headphones. Cardboard box which my monitor sits on top of (from a Netgear switch). Lollipop. Business cards of graphic design company we use. Post-it notes. Three biros and a pencil. Sunglasses. Notepad. Random bits of paper the project manager keeps giving me because she doesn't use Bugzilla properly. A toy cat, who has 'caught' a spare computer mouse. Black electrical tape. Two AA batteries. My computer, which for some reason isn't on the floor where any normal person would keep it. Spare contact lenses. Lip salve. Wallet. 2GB of Kingston RAM in sealed packets. Business card of the (useless) agency I rent my flat through. Jar of Marmite. Box of Weetabix. Pack of Cherry Drops. A fresh cherry slice. Print-out of 5000+ antique dealers with possible duplicates marked in fluorescent pen, because our last temp apparently couldn't use Excel. SEO report. About a hundred spare napkins that have come with my morning sandwiches since I started working here. Jiffy bag containing custom jewellery that I have to send back because the guy completely ignored the specifications we agreed on when he made it. Phone/USB cable. Book on Perl Testing. Some random stuff that the last guy to use this desk left behind when he was sacked.

How's yours?

Such a detailed account. I should copy you.

2 x routers. One linksys + One Cisco.
3 x telephones. One VOIP, one mobile, one wireless.
2 x TFTs.
3 x mugs. One in use, two dead.
2 x cigarette lighters.
1 x packet of cigarettes.

Then we have the meat:

Five cupmats, one ash-try, one wallet, one box of cotton buds, one watch, one USB card reader, one jam-jar full of pens and pencils. One camera, one perl book, one empty bottle of water, two bottles of wine. Random collections of cables, one assortment of loose change, two one-pound notes, and a small card from an Amazon wishlist donation.

It's only that detailed because that's how much crap I have on my desk :) All the flat surfaces in my flat are similarly encumbered.

I work with [livejournal.com profile] earle, whose desk contains exactly one keyboard, one mouse, one monitor, one notepad, one mobile phone, and one pair of glasses - which is why he started asking everyone this question today :)

My desk = my (loosely defined) bit of lab benching.

From left to right:
Stack of letterhead paper (not mine), BadGirl page-a-day calendar, pen holder, bits of paper with current work, [computer], stapler, conference CDrom, univadis ad coaster, 2x menues, phone, printer, box of tissues, large blue Starbucks mug, shorthand notepad.
On windowsill: beanbag scorpion, photo of my cat, cat paperweight. Also, 4 bits of paper blu-tacked to the windows and wall. Trays and folders on the chest of drawers next to me, folders on shelf under the desk, big pile of filing in front of that.

Jeez, there didn't look like that much when I saw it. Next time I'm going to have to look a little more closely.

I don't exactly have a work desk, when I do, it generally has a couple of towells and a mostly naked human.

My little side desk at home next to my chair which doubles as a desk of sorts currently has my gorgeous 2 week old custom built apple macbook pro, which I am deeply in love with, it's very sad. I also have a jabra JX10 bluetooth headset, the charger for the headset, the 60Gb hard drive out of my old Tibook that died this summer, in a firewire case that [livejournal.com profile] _neophyte_ spent ages searching for on TCH for me, a firewire cable for my ipod, my ipod, mobile phone, cup of tea.

And that was me, in case it wasn't obvious. (Utterly failed to notice I wasn't logged in!)

I guessed from the combination of 'pound notes' and 'perl book' :)

I stack things neatly - it tends to hide just how much Stuff I have laying around :)

Memory test. This will be interesting. And lo-tech.
Green concertina file containing dusty, unloved and unknown old leaflets.
Publicity material about cuts to our service, in the hope that clients will complain to the council. Telephone, circa 1984, one of the first ever push-button models in a pleasant shade of beige. A4 sized brown cutlery-style tray of stationery bits n bobs, including the retro delights of treasury tags and staple removers. blue ringbinder of useful info. the Welfare Benefits Guide 06-07 (bible). bit of paper with the ethnicity codes for statistics. keyboard & CRT monitor (thankfully black). spectacle wipes. loo roll in case people cry / have colds / children who spill things. hand cream. apple.
Metal 4-shelf tray. The top three shelves of this are as immaculate with little neat stacks of forms, envelopes and misc stationery, as if Mary Popppins had just clicked her fingers. In the base one, the gods only know what burgeoning horrors lurk: unfiled correspondence? threadbare timesheets? deeply embarrassing private jottings on scraps of paper? And underneath all that, a lot of multicoloured cardboard dividers.
