Aren't bullets usually made of soft lead? I bet it wouldn't fare so well against an AP bullet rather than a dum-dum round.

the swords are generally created in such a way that they are very strong- the way they are tempered etc is amazing. I watched a documentary a while back.

Yes - they fold two types of metal - one supple, the other hard 'a thousand times' - in reality they fold it only a few times (10?) to make 210 = 1024 layers of metal. This means the blade is strong but supple, and is able to keep a very good edge.
