So the letting agent just rang me back. Apparently he has, I kid you not, "a friend looking to rent a room in this area - but just for a month". There's a fucking coincidence eh? So. His 'friend' is going to take the flat for the next four weeks, and then I can move in on my preferred moving-in date, with no additional charges in the meantime, because his 'friend' will have paid the rent up to then. Isn't that handy. *shakes head in disbelief*

He seemed like such a nice honest bloke too. There's something about certain jobs that really brings out the weirdest underhanded behaviour in people... property, and anything to do with cars (sales or repairs), are the two industries that immediately spring to mind.

Anyway, I'll be putting my deposit down on Monday after work. So "woo, yay, houpla", and if there are no more interesting surprises coming my way (in this respect at least) then I'll be living here from mid-June on.

Yeah, it's a bit of a long walk to work (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Hoxton+Square+to+51.5323+,+-0.0868&ll=51.529555,-0.084145&spn=0.011881,0.029998&om=1), but I think I'll manage.

Don't forget to be a complete hardarse if the place isn't fit to move into the day your money heads their way - immaculate cleanliness and so forth. Make them get a cleaner in if need be.

He was scamming me two days ago, when he tried to extract 50% rent from me for the time between now and when I want to move in.

This means I get to tell Dave it IS possible to have time to plan moves rather than doing stupid 2 week panicking in london. Ha!

*laugh*

I guess it's a face-saving thing - it's better for him to believe that he's given you the impression that he's "fixed things" rather than having had to climb down over trying to rip you off.

There's a really good Fresh and Wild shop just by Old Street roundabout for you to continue your healthy eating :)
That bit is a weird mixture of very very bad and quite nice, I hope you are in the nice bit. You are rather close to Hoxton which even though it sounds cool, is really quite dingy. There is a plaque round there on a very depressing 1960's building saying 'this was where Guy Fawkes was arrested'
I moved from the other side of Old Street 2 years ago so I know it well :)
If you walk down City Road from Old Street there's a graveyard, it's the Bunhill Fields, it is really nice to visit on a sunny day, George Bernard Shaw and wassisname De Foe are buried there among others. The graveyard was one of the first non-comformist graveyards (not attached to a church) and it was a plague pit!
It's a lovely green spot anyway.
It's an interesting part of London, but I am a History Geek :)

The bit I'm in does lean towards the dingy side of things... but it's not too horrible, and it is affordable. :)

I think it's better to live a bit small and dingy but central than live out in zone 3, at least while you are childless. I love London. It's also great to be walking distance to the Thames and long but doable walking distance to the west end and Camden, which you are there.
It all changes when one gets broody though and unless you can afford to live in Hamstead (which I couldn't!), I'm afraid it was the country side for me!

Congrats! Glad it's all working out smoothly, despite the best efforts of the bloody estate agents :)
