denny: (This way up)
[personal profile] denny
Middle of last week my main PC at home threw another one of its periodic fits and started rebooting itself every time I logged into X-windows. Obviously this game gets a bit dull after a while, and this time I actually had (just) enough tuits that I finally got around to starting the Linux install on my new PC... well, kinda new - I bought it almost a year ago, but have been too lazy to get Linux on it until now. Anyway, a few long evenings later (the installation of Linux with nVidia graphics on AMD64 architecture is apparently not entirely simple) I have the thing up and running. I still have to get the multiple screens up and running, but I have the main screen working properly now, a 20" TFT at a lovely 1600x1200. *strokes*

Anyway, it's just occurred to me that one of the reasons I'm feeling reluctant to leave the flat this weekend is that I want to be near my freshly installed shiny 'new' PC. Occasionally I amaze myself with the depths of the sad still unplumbed in my geeky little soul :)

That realised, I'm now going to find some odds and ends and then head to sunny Cambridge in my shiny car to see my lovely but currently "floppy" girlfriend - who apparently has some kind of uber-lurgy turning her into a rag-doll. Hopefully I won't catch it, and she'll feel well enough for us to head back into London for TG tomorrow night.

Edit: oh yes, I knew there was something else... if you tend to hang out in a lot of networks on IRC, check out the 'tree' view of channel tabs in X-chat. It's my new favourite thing.

"raggy doll" was always our word at school for those of us who were crappy at sports and didn't care :)

I love you. See you soon. *hugkiss* xxxxx

thats what I still like about M$ - you put the disk in the drive and it gets on with it all on its own..

..sure they are a evil corporation, but when it is pirated CD does it matter?

We went to worship at the apple cathedralshop today, cos Dave is thinking that computers famed for not falling over all the time and with a lower power consumption would be nice.

I played on one while he got on with stuff.

I broke it very dead. We have no idea how.

You have a 20" TFT? Bah, damn you with your sexy monitoring equipment.
I've got three 17" CRTs running at 1024x768, 1280x960 and 1024x768. The two 1024s are running off one 5500 nVidia PCI card and the 1280 running on a single nVidia 5700, which serves as my gaming screen.

I have two 19" 1280x1024 TFTs that I have to get up and running with this box too... I had those two working together on the old machine, got the 20" on special offer when I bought this box. Hopefully I can run one of them off of the VGA output on this 6600, and the other one off of a PCI nVidia that I was using for the same purpose in the old machine.

Hah! I installed Windows (XP) for someone today... fucking nightmare. Still haven't got her USB wireless thing to work after trying for hours, despite having both the manufacturer's CD and the latest drivers from the 'net to try.

No, I just take vicarious pleasure in you two managing to get there. You're almost always chirpier afterwards.
