"We believe that Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema's actions are in fact hate speech. The movie is intentionally being named The Two Towers in order to capitalize on the tragedy of September 11. Clearly, you cannot deny the fact that this falls under hate speech. We believe that if they will not willingly change the name, the government should step in to stop the movie's production or to force a name change."

That's retarded. I want to make a movie with a name like "THE TWO TOWERS THAT ARE NO MORE" or something just.for.them.

I'm going to assume that that's satire. And refuse to go there in case I'm forced to believe otherwise.

I'm afraid it's not satire.

The petition's been floating around for at least a couple of months. I remember looking at it back then and very few signatories were taking it at all seriously. I still think it's a joke - and they have my respect for being so straightfaced about it.

If it wasn't for the , possibly an urban legend, debates about the title of "the madness of king george" I'd be inclined to agree.

Oh *do* let me find them and beat them all to death with my one-volume copy of Lord Of The Rings (and not to compromise on irony, it does have the titles of the separate books at the tops of the pages :)

Well yeah, I think if they have the courage of their convictions they should be out picketing cinemas tonight trying to stop people getting in to the first showings of this epic piece of hate speech... now that would be make waiting in the queue a lot more entertaining.

I shall stab them to death with my ears. :)
Ooh, hey, there's two ears. Oh no. That must be hate speech as well.

That'll be tricky.

I was thinking that. I don't know how long this site has been running, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's only a few days or weeks...

Not sure about the site, but the petition and the organization have been around for a while. But even so as all 3 parts were filmed before the first screened...

Or do I misrecall that?

No, you're right:

That's interesting - I didn't know about that.  Now we can all be even more annoyed when they delay the release of the third one until December 2003 (yep, that's what it says), presumably for maximum commercial benefit...

Of course that was only filiming, which makes a lot of sense rather than trying ot get all the actors back together repeatedly. I suspect post production, CGI etc. may have at least partly prevented them from being released that close together.

The most hilarious reply to this that I have heard (forgive me if someone else has posted it already) is this:

"I am an Elvis Fan. I'm planning a lawsuit when they make Return of the King."
