Braids started losing structural integrity yesterday, so I decided to take them out. Started at 9pm, finished at 2am. Didn't lose as much hair as I was expecting to, but then I've not had them in that long.

In other news, my leg really fucking hurts. It's been getting worse all week - I can only presume that the 20 minute walk to work is more than I can currently cope with. I don't really see a solution for that though - I just hope it gets used to it soon, because at the minute I can barely walk at all by the time I get here in the mornings, and the pain level isn't helping my concentration either.

I did some ringing around yesterday about getting my new flat online... it's on Telewest, so on the bright side I can have 1.5Mb cable for much the same price as my 512Kb ADSL + BT line was costing me in MK. On the down side I have to install Windows on something for them to come around and install their software on, as they refuse to support Linux to a truly pathological extent - they won't even come round and plug the modem in without a Windows machine sat there, let alone set up the connection for me. Oh, and they can't do it until the 9th (next Thursday). At least that gives me time to borrow a Win98 CD from work and do the evil deed. My poor PC. Oh well, at least [livejournal.com profile] duranorak can play Alice on it now... she's only been waiting for a year or so.

American MacGee's Alice? A good reason to install Win98 on almost anything - it's a great game :-). Doom 3 is better, of course, but .... </nosadgamer>

It may just be your leg getting used to the new level of exercise, so it should improve after a week or so. If not, see if there's a bus you can get part of the way?

Yeah, I'm hoping it will settle down eventually. It's the morning walk that is the problem - my leg is always stiff and aching in the mornings, with all the muscles tightening up overnight - so a 20 minute walk half an hour after getting up really doesn't agree with it. Maybe I should start doing stretching exercises in the morning, although I suspect that would just cause the same problem as the walk does, without the advantage of getting me anywhere.

There's definitely no direct bus route - the road runs through an industrial estate with weight limits at my end of it. I suppose there might be one that goes around the edges though, worth a look.

Currently I'm contemplating one of these:

...although I hear the local police are a bit keen on picking people up for riding them on the pavements, even on a deserted industrial estate pavement, so I'm not sure how long I'd get away with it for. Still, if my dad wants to buy me one for my birthday, it could be worth a try.

Someone was whizzing around the office on one of those yesterday. If you know where to look (i.e. dodgy East London electrical goods shops), you can pick them up as cheap as £30.

*shrug* The cable seemed like a better deal, as I don't have to take an unwanted phone service along with it.

Sounds like you're getting a crippled connection for your money, though.

Only in that it will be unsupported... and I've never found ISP support services to be of any use anyway. That said, the choice is wider in London, I know I've seen a couple who were aware of the concept of non-Windows operating systems.

Still, there will be a certain satisfaction to not having to pay BT anything at all :) and the connection speed sounds good to me. I've heard some first-hand customer praise for the service quality too, from two friends, so I'm reasonably hopeful.

I'll let you know when I know - which will be after I've had a chance to settle in a bit.

This month's main event is on a Friday anyway, so no use to you...

Sorry about the leg - there are no buses that would take you enough of the way to help?

~hug~ Your poor PC can cope with it. And, y'know. Alice. :)

Love you.

They register the modem to your MAC address. Although I hear rumours that you can add extra MAC addresses yourself using their website, so it could still be an option.

Are you aware of this rather useful page? I can't vouch for the bits about Blueyonder, but it's always been correct about NTL for me.

Yes, you can - I did this. You can also do it over the 'phone. Saltationism was on Telewest for ages and I never installed Windows on it.

You have to be familiar enough with the Windows networking stuff to fake it over the 'phone though.

"Run 'winipcfg'"
(runs "ifconfig")
"OK"

Try putting a hot pad or something similar on it when you get up, and getting it moving on the train (which will look daft). Cod liver oil may help.
