Reading...

Purchased yesterday afternoon, and consumed this morning/afternoon; one graphic novel and one sci-fi short story collection. Both recommended.

The graphic novel is called How Loathsome by Ted Naifeh (and Tristan Crane), and is well worth reading. It basically charts a few weeks or months in the life of a cute young androgyne, touching on her (as it eventually turns out) interactions with goths, fetishists, junkies, TVs and TGs. There are some trippy daydream sequences, and some fun observations... I bought it on the strength of this excerpt from the third page:
"First of all you should know that fetish parties are, for the most part, what you were afraid your parents and their friends did together after you had gone to bed. The scene is typically a mixture of middle-aged corset and spandex-clad live-action role-playing and Trekkie types..."

The book is User Friendly by Spider Robinson (I think my eyes originally fastened on it due to the vague similarity to Spider Jerusalem's name :) ). I bought it when I realised that I'd stood and read three pages of the first story I flicked it open on, without thinking to shift my weight off of my bad leg while I was reading. Almost the entire book is similarly engaging, with a nice amount of variety in themes to the stories - plus some brief monologues from the author which I also enjoyed.

Didn't do my paperwork yesterday... I really should deal with some of that tomorrow, as it's long overdue and Bad Things are probably happening by now due to my ignoring it for so long. Was nice to see people at [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren's party last night. Sorry I couldn't stay longer but I decided that I needed to wake up in my own flat (for reasons of mental balance) - which meant leaving at 11pm for the long tube trek to Sahf London... I got home at 20 to 1 in the morning, after catching not quite the last tube but pretty close to it.

Update: forgot another graphic novel that I bought a while ago and finished this morning... The Filth by Grant Morrison. I think he may be the same guy who's responsible for The Invisibles (which I haven't read), but the guy in the shop said The Filth makes The Invisibles seem quite normal by comparison - so if you've read it, that may mean something to you. When I picked The Filth up in the comic shop, I flicked it open to a page where a guy is having a fake personality purged so he can go back to work as some kind of super-agent... said purge being triggered by a blowjob. So I bought it, obviously :) The whole thing glories in surreality and general weirdness, and is quite well written and nicely drawn. I can't recommend the characters or story as much as How Loathsome, but it was still pretty good. Probably a case of 'recommended if you like that kind of thing' - although I'm not sure I could define what 'that kind of thing' is :)
