denny: (This way up)
Well yes, just about. There were some severely kludgy moments in the middle, but I've now got a mostly functional Debian (Sid) system up and running. All I have to do now is retrieve all my bookmarks and contacts for various 'net programs, and move some relevant data files back on here. And spend hours trying to reconfigure things to look the way I like - I can't seem to get any GNOME themes to work except the ones that come with the system, which is a bit annoying.

For anyone who's interested, I really don't recommend trying Debian unless you're feeling quite geeky - it's not a simple install. Alternatively, go with [livejournal.com profile] ciphergoth's suggestion to me, which was to get a Debian geek to sit next to you while you do it - I suspect that would have made things go a lot more smoothly.

Incidentally, y'know I was complaining about there being no hardware detection? There's a Debian package called 'discover' that seems to have most of the required functionality - it's a shame the installer doesn't appear to make any use of it.

I've finally managed to get my desktop looking almost exactly the way it did before the Debian install, and suddenly I feel much happier about the whole thing. Call me shallow, but if there's one good thing Apple has provided the world of computing with, it's the millions of MacOS X Aqua themes that have sprung up in their wake. I feel much better now that I've got my preferred version back in place.

*boing*, went Zebedee.

For those who are playing who weren't already aware of it, this recruiter thing (a) works pretty well, and (b) has been okayed by the game admins: http://www.techfools.com/clanrecruiter/

It's basically an automated link-trading service. The theory is that for each click you put in, you get one back from someone else. In practise you have to stay a way ahead if you want it to work well - get a 50-100 click headstart, and then you'll start seeing more or less a 1:1 click ratio after that.
