I suppose it wouldn't be technically difficult for anyone with actual criminal intentions to get an offshore email address of some kind, given that you can pick up emails from anywhere, so in addition to this being outrageous it's also not going to be much use in tracking down criminals who aren't too terminally stupid to figure out a way round it.

Well, exactly.

It's all utterly futile from the point of view of actually catching anyone who is deliberately setting out to do wrong.

The political angle worries me too, given that our British Secret Service is sufficiently rightwing and paranoid to have kept files on Labour Party members, including our current Home Secretary.
