It does say 'the letters in a word' (well, it says something that means that). I assumed therefore it meant 'the letters that belong in the word if spelt correctly', although I suppose you could read it otherwise...

That makes sense. They've studied people's eye movements when reading, and found that people don't scan a line smoothly; they jump from point to point instead and fill in the gaps. 'Node points' or something they called them. Some people's node points are further away than others - these people tend to read faster, but also have a higher likelihood of mis-reading bits.

That'd be me then...

I find I can read the above, but slighty slower than I would if it was spelt corrently.

Okay - I can tell what you're saying, but the annoyance that the spelling is causing won't let me read beyond the point of the post. I really hope somebody doesn't use that study as an excuse to further underfund the education system.
