Microsoft intend to prevent anything except their own software communicating across the MSN Messenger network. This constitutes fair warning to anyone I know who uses only MSN Messenger - get a real IM client and network, now. For Windows, I understand Trillian is very nice. On Linux, I use gAIM which seems to work fine. As far as networks are concerned, I've found ICQ the most reliable, then Yahoo.

That'll be why gaim keeps moaning at me everytime I restart it. Oh well I'm not running MSN messenger its evil and last time I let it on MacOS it shat everywhere.

Oh well, will go seek MSN only ppl and get other IM protocol details out off them.

Fneh.

i found ICQ's reliability went shoom downhill after AOL took them over. mind you, that was years ago and i basically haven't used it since. did it pick up again?

Well, I was only judging its reliability relative to the other IM networks... I wouldn't call any of them reliable in an absolute sense. It's the one that most often works when I fire up gAIM, and the one that drops connection the least once I'm online... ymmv.
