On hotlinking, goatse, and the state of the idiots currently doing 'web design'.

That has thoroughly amused me tonight.

Guy I know who runs a bike shop in the US is always getting people on ebay using photos from his site so he does something similar to stop them but instead of goatse uses an image with a legal blurb on it to tell everyone on the site that the image of the bike isn't what they're going to be getting.

I like goatse better :)

However it does make me despair.

While the concept of changing or redirecting the image in response to unauthorised linking is fine, I don't like how he used a pornographic image when he knew it would appear on a site viewed by children and teenagers, despite that use being outside of his control.

In his situation I would have 403 (http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html#sec10.4.4) (forbidden) or 307 (http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html#sec10.3.8) (temp redirect - to a cached copy e.g. Google or some harmless resource on another server) IP addresses/referrers from Myspace and the web design company, plus emailed the design company with a takedown request on that layout template...

...and they would have ignored him.

Like someone else said in his comments, I approve of 'consequences'.

Although that said, a nice happy fluffy picture of a brightly coloured flower would probably have annoyed users of that design almost sufficiently :)

I'm disturbed that you find the goatse man sexually desirable. :)

I don't :-p

I was merely using the term as it had been used in the article/comments, and for lack of other terms coming to mind.

Even more annoying - flashing image between bright red and puce green (although this could be a problem for epileptic viewers)...

I'm not sure that anyone would consider that kind of background to be unusual on MySpack.

I suspect that 'obscene' is probably the word you'd want, legally speaking.

"Horrific"? I'd say it it's that. The problem with that word is that it carries less moral weight - children see horrific things all the time, and it's part of growing up. Hell, children *do* horrific things to each other all the time.
