As previously mentioned, I'm mildly in favour of the new update page myself, but this was a good read nonetheless:
http://naamah-darling.livejournal.com/233080.html

In other, more serious news, I had a short and entirely successful "I want a promotion" conversation this morning. The CTO here is leaving in February, and I'll be stepping up to take on a number of his duties, plus a few other things that he didn't cover. So. Some panic going on right now, but on the whole I'm looking forward to the challenge. And the payrise.

In extremely related news, we're hiring. And uh, that's my problem now. So if anyone knows anyone who is looking for a Perl Developer role, working on a fairly large-scale website project and related odds and ends, then please put them in touch with me - denny at online galleries dotcom. We're based in Hoxton Square, have slight flexitime (you can come in at half nine and leave at six, if you don't like mornings), and we're a very small company so it's friendly here. We are however working in the art and antiques industry, so we have adequate backing capital and are not about to go out of business under your nose :) Salary range is 30-35k, applicant's ability is expected to be in a suitably matching range. Usual skillset - perl, linux, apache, blah, blah. Experience of the Metadot CMS would be an advantage, but really isn't expected or needed - I'd never heard of it before I started, and it's pretty easy to pick up.

By the way, what job title should I ask for (if any) now that I'm going to be in charge of the (small) development team? I'm currently 'Senior Perl Developer', should I just leave it at that, or is there something better to hint at the managerial stuff I'm taking on now?

That's to rhyme with "read", not "bread".

That's to rhyme with "read" ..

I completely read (heh) that in the past tense. Twice.

Attach it to the end of your name. "Denny De La Haye, Brotherhood of Friendly Helpers."

That rant is fantastically amusing! I agree with its general gist, but I don't use the Update page myself. That's what clients are for - pick one you like, get it to work the way you want to, hey presto.

Good news on the promotion! Well done you. As for job title, meh, unless you have flash business cards that impress people, it's a bit moot, isn't it? Stick the word "mangler""manager" in there somewhere if you can bear it... then again, if your team are all "Perl Developer"s and you're the "Senior PD", then that conveys hierarchy in my book. Or just staying power, I guess... ;-)

I didn't really like any of the clients I tested, although I didn't put a lot of effort into getting used to them... I'm happy enough with the web UI anyway.

The job title question only really becomes relevant when I'm applying for my next/subsequent jobs, and this one has become an entry on my CV. I'm hoping that having moved up to Lead Developer or Development Manager or something will look good to whoever is considering hiring me at that point.

I always lie on my CV and pick the name of the rĂ´le I *actually* did - so far no-one's raised an eyebrow.

Good plan :)

I tend to regard titles as meaningless, although I was kinda proud of my previous title of "System Administrator / Toolsmith". (I still have about 995 business cards with that printed on them; why I needed to be given so many is a mystery to me!)

I almost talked a company into giving me business cards with 'Code Poet' on them once, but in the end they decided I didn't meet enough customers for it to be worth giving me cards.

In this case the company was bought out and so the new owners gave everybody 1000. I didn't want/need/deserve them but I think they figured getting a list of all employees and their titles would make sure nobody important was left out.

Over here it goes Dev - Senior Dev - Unit Leader - Technologies Leader or something like that.

Lead Developer sounds cooler than Unit Leader, though Grand High Poobah is even better. (I would at this point link to the Ozy and Millie title generator, but the links are broken *pokes [livejournal.com profile] wechsler*)
