Stuff and Things
Dec. 12th, 2003 01:34 amForgot to post about my physio-therapy appointment earlier. I got stretched. Occasionally painful, often un-nerving, but at the end of it I could actually bend my right ankle 90 degrees from my leg, meaning I could stand up properly (normally I can't get my heel on the floor with my legs side by side, a consequence of them cutting through the muscles on both sides during the second operation). This new and improved 'almost working properly' status lasted about four hours before it slowly reverted to normal, but anyway... I have exercises to do every day and there's every indication that I'll regain full mobility of the joint. So that's nice.
Even better, in discussion with the physio-terrorist in question, I mentioned my concerns that when I go back in three months for my next check-up, it'll then be another three months after that before I'm finally allowed to walk, and she said that actually if all goes well, she'd be expecting them to class me as safe to be fully weight-bearing at the next check-up. So I might only have 3 more months of life on crutches to put up with, instead of the six I was worried I might have. Yay!
She also said that it's usually at least a year from 'full weight-bearing' to 'full recovery', i.e. the muscular damage will take as long to repair and rebuild as the bones did, and I can't really start rebuilding one until the other has finished... but it'll be less crippling to lifestyle than the bones - I should be feeling 'mostly' normal within a few months, just lacking strength and stamina for longer.
On the whole, I came away from the appointment feeling very positive... which was nice after the low that Tuesday's appointment left me with.
