2. With a much bigger budget, probably. Remember the USA were showing off at the time vs. the USSR - the space race was a major beneficiary of the cold war. These days they spend their money on their armed forces instead...

you are probably right, I have never really bought into the whole "conspiracy theory" thing, but If i did these recent developments would certainly make me wonder.
I think life was a little cheaper then - to make it and die trying would still be making it. but now people expect astronauts to come back in one piece.
