The government has introduced draft legislation for a national identity card. The card system will cost at least £3 billion and is likely to become an essential part of life for everyone residing in the UK.

If the draft legislation is accepted by Parliament, everyone will be required to register for a card. Biometric scans of the face, fingers and eye will be taken. Personal details will be stored in a central database. A unique number will be issued that will become the basis for the matching of computer systems.

The proposed card may be required to access vital public services and to receive benefits. The government proposes to enforce the programme through numerous new criminal and civil offenses, including provision for unlimited financial penalty and up to ten years' imprisonment.

The implications for everyone in the UK are far-reaching.

Join us at this important meeting to hear from key figures in the fields of law, politics, security, technology and human rights. Decide for yourself whether this is a plan that should be supported.

The meeting is free of charge.

(my emphasis on the second paragraph - imo, if you're not scared by that, you have no imagination)

Am I missing something about what's so bad with the proposal?

Call me cynical but isn't it the age old question of "If you're not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about"?

You don't believe there has ever been a case where a government (and/or their agents) persecuted people who were doing nothing wrong?

Perhaps you trust our current government and their agents (personally, I don't), but do you trust all our future governments as well?

Exactly. There is so much scope for compulsory ID cards to be misused that it outweighs any possible benefits.

I'm thinking of it as a parallel to CCTV, where it is misused to spy on people in shop changing rooms &c.

hellooooo :)

Heyla...

It's getting better, yeah. I still need a walking cane at present, but hopefully I should be able to cope without that in a few months. It's still quite painful at times, but such is life... I think it's going as well as can be expected really.

How's life treating you?

Oh cool... I'm just trying to manage a move to London myself, but I'm having trouble finding a suitable job at present.

I probably won't get another bike if I do move to London, unless I happen to find a room to rent with a garage I can use.
