This and that...
Feb. 19th, 2007 10:36 pmTo the gym again this evening. It was kind of easy really. Didn't try to overdo anything, as I pushed myself a bit hard on Saturday and was worried about the backlash (which was less than I was expecting, but still, no point in being silly twice in one week). Zoomed through my whole programme up to the last couple of things, where I got a bit derailed by something unexpected - not a physical slump, but an emotional one. The reason? A couple on the exercise mats to the right of where I was using the shoulder press machine, discussing my leg rather audibly:
Her: "Eww, that's horrible!"
Him: "Eh? Oh! Yeah, bit stomach-turning."
Thanks very much for that. You only 'had' to look at it for a few minutes, I have to live with it every day. Bastards.
I was actually surprised by how much that upset me. Made getting the last couple of sets done a bit hard going, but I soldiered through them and then drove home with a certain amount of um, flair. Shiny car with loud stereo make everything better :)
Things I will be posting periodic reminders about:
Twitter - let all your friends know what you're up to via SMS.
Circus on the Circus - a circus skills event near my flat.
I've invited my kid brother to come down and stay on the weekend of the latter. He lives in Norfolk, is 18 this year (omg! I am teh old!!) and is better at every circus toy we have in common, plus he can do a few more too. Flash git. :)

Date: 2007-02-20 12:10 am (UTC)Having considered it, I think it's because I grew up in a culture that is much closer to its warrior past than this one (and which has significantly worse health-care). Someone carries the kind of thing you do, it is immediate evidence that they have survived a seriously life-threatening incident: and in your case, not only survived but recovered and have the will-power to start working out in a fucking gym. You do not diss people with scars. You respect the fact they had the balls and the heart to get back on their feet.

I'm shocked by the lack of manners, unsurprised by the shallowness.

Date: 2007-02-20 11:32 am (UTC)I've been lucky on the scar front - I love my scars and fortunately people have never said anything horrible about them, though I've overheard some interesting discussions I didn't have a heart to correct - I've been shot, stabbed and various other thing apparently :D
However, I've over heard comments about the stretch marks on my stomach and that did hurt, incredibly - and they're always in the back of my mind. For what it's worth, however you feel about them yourself, your scars are beautiful on many levels :)

Date: 2007-02-20 02:15 pm (UTC)On the other hand, there ain't nothing like soldiering on anyway and doin' good at the gym and then driving home all flairy and shiny to make said rude, stupid arseholes look microscopic in comparison. Go you. :-)
I am tempted by Twitter. But this may be because I am a sheep rather than because I should actually get it. Hmmm.

Date: 2007-02-20 08:10 pm (UTC)Apparently in some parts of America and it is coming to the UK, people who have physical disabilities are finding that random people will start taking pictures of them without asking on camera phones and stuff. They don't even ask, just point and click! I'd love to go for someone if they did that to me - in the UK I own copyright on the image!
