Bookshelf Meme

Instructions: Take one list of authors, remove those whose efforts do not grace your shelves and make the list up to ten by adding some more that do.

Ursula Le Guin
Neal Stephenson
Frank Herbert
Michael Marshall Smith
Steve Erickson
Victor Hugo
John Wyndham
Margaret Atwood
Michael Moorcock
Lewis Carroll
Mercedes Lackey
Julian May
William Gibson
Robert Heinlein

I also considered adding Iain M. Banks (but he'd only just been removed from the list in his Iain Banks guise), and Terry Pratchett (but I prefer the ones I've listed).

Ancestry: [livejournal.com profile] nisaba -> [livejournal.com profile] jhaelan -> [livejournal.com profile] drplokta -> [livejournal.com profile] swisstone -> [livejournal.com profile] zotz -> [livejournal.com profile] sheepthief -> [livejournal.com profile] sunflowerinrain -> [livejournal.com profile] hippo22 (who started it)

I'm not at home at the moment (nooo, don't go break in to my house!) but of those authors the only ones that are on my shelf are William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. I also have Iain Banks (and Iain M. Banks, of course) and Terry Pratchett.

There was a point to all of this but I don't recall what it was.

Ah, yes. I don't have any of the 'classic' authors at all. Does this make me a bad person?

No, but it does make you a person who should go read some Michael Marshall Smith. [livejournal.com profile] tacohell loaned me a book by him earlier this year, and I immediately went out and bought everything he'd written. If you like Gibson and Stephenson, I think you'll like his stuff too.

I've got considerably more Iain M Banks than Iain Banks, I shall amend my post accordingly.

Good thing I didn't get this meme from you - I have all those authors :)

If you love Michael Marshall Smith, I'd lay bets that you'd like Steve Erickson. Amnesiascope is the best of his that I've read so far - I'd lend it to you but it's currently lent out already.

I did actually look at this meme when [livejournal.com profile] zotz posted it and decide not to bother... then I saw your list and thought 'ooh, some of those are Really Good', and I had to join in :)

I'll look into Erickson - thanks for the tip!

my bookshelf.

Looks like we have different literary tastes. I have none of those authors. I'm not sure how to screw with that list as I am programming illiterate, but I have a whole different set. Scratch all 10 and replace with:

Danielewski
H.P. Lovecraft
Edgar Allen Poe
Milton
Steinbeck
Proust
George Carlin
Stephen Hawking
Jack Kerouac
Neil Gaiman

:-)

I have stuff by the last three of those - although I never finished reading 'On The Road', I didn't like the writing style.
